Fleet Services' mission is to maintain and dispatch safe, reliable and appropriate vehicles and
equipment for City departments in the most cost efficient manner possible, by focusing on the customer's
needs for equipment necessary to provide services critical to the safety of the community and maintenance
and improvement of City assets.
Activities to Fulfill Mission
- Provide maintenance and repairs to the approximately 11,000 vehicles and pieces of equipment that
comprise the City fleet.
- Supply Pool Vehicles
Fleet Services is comprised of six sections: Area I, II, and III Repair Facilities, Training,
Dispatch, and Administration. Within these sections, there are 29 repair facilities located throughout
the Metropolitan area, San Fernando Valley, and San Pedro. These Fleet Services facilities are
responsible for the repair and maintenance of a wide variety and complexity of vehicles and pieces
Vehicle Management System
The implementation of the Vehicle Management System (VMS) has allowed Fleet Services to effectively
and efficiently allocate resources and schedule work for our customers. Using the VMS, Fleet
Services was able to transition from a repair-oriented operation to a proactive maintenance operation.
Specifically, equipment is now easily scheduled for preventative maintenance/safety inspections,
in many cases during non-working hours, which dramatically reduces the frequency of equipment
failures. This aggressive approach to maintenance/safety has allowed Fleet Services to better
serve customers' vehicle maintenance needs in a timely fashion.
The Fleet Services Division provides and maintains automobiles, trucks, aircraft, and special purpose
equipment for Council-controlled Departments, excluding Police and Fire (although LAPD and Fire
aircraft are maintained by Fleet Services). Additionally, the Division supplies pool vehicles,
provides towing services, and handles non-repair vehicle maintenance.
