Police Officer (Class Code 3183)
General Services Police Officers are sworn peace officers, designated under California Penal Code section 830.31 and recognized by the Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training of the State of California as a P.O.S.T. certified agency.

Police Officers participate in a variety of duties, assigned to foot, bicycle, vehicle patrol, and high profile post assignments throughout the City and enforce state and local laws, traffic regulations, and safety rules to ensure the safety of elected officials, City employees, visitors and property. Police Officers issue citations, make arrests, impound vehicles, provide information and assistance to the public and City officials, and conduct general Law Enforcement activities.

To qualify for this position, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire
  • Graduated from high school or equivalent
  • Possess a valid California driver's license
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or must have applied for U.S. Citizenship prior to applying for the Police Officer position
The selection process includes:

  • Multiple Choice Written Test
  • Evaluation of Overall Qualifications
  • Physical Ability Test
  • Thorough Background Investigation
  • Psychological written test and interview
  • Medical Examination
  • May be required to undergo a Drug and Alcohol screening test

P.O.S.T. certified candidates may waive the written multiple-choice test and may be selectively certified (considered prior to other candidates due to their advanced training). General Services Police currently utilizes the Los Angeles Police Academy as the primary basic police training school for the Police Officer recruit. The academy is approximately 24 weeks in length and demands a high level of physical fitness including cardiovascular and strength training, academic ability in P.O.S.T. Learning Domains and state laws, firearms qualification and manipulations, defensive tactics, emergency driving, report writing, and conforming to the academy lifestyle.
